When it comes to laying your own crazy paving path or making a crazy paving path look better, even breaking slabs for crazy paving is covered in this series of FAQs here at DIY Garden.
As with all good garden projects, planning and preparation is key to success.
Planning & Preparing to Lay a Crazy Paving Path
Laying the route and digging the depth of foundation for a crazy paving path is the first step towards the goal. Depending on the type of stone or slabs in use will determine how deep any foundation needs to be – see the image below for more details on the way in which the base of a path foundation is made up.
Placing the Slabs & Arranging Stones for a Path
Once a base has been established to lay crazy paving on top of then it is simply a case of creating the path out of slabs or broken slabs. Starting from the centre of the path, simply arrange stones in a fashion which suits and leaves about the same amount of space around each slab so as to push the mortar in here after.
It is also possible to place a layer of cement below the slabs so that they stick down to the foundation surface tightly and do not move under duress or pressure. Using a rubber mallet it is possible to knock down each slab as it is placed so as to ensure that they are firmly stuck in place.
Filling the Gaps in Crazy Paving
Once the path has been arranged and slabs are in place it is possible to then simply push sand and cement into the spaces.
This video found on Youtube also gives an idea of how this can be created with a brush and wet cement however this technique can leave residue on stones and so must be cleaned ASAP or can damage the stone surface.
How to Clean up Crazy Paving & Make it Look Better
To make existing crazy paving look better it is simply a case of cleaning it up and re-pointing the gaps in the middle, mixing in part sand and cement when dry and leaving this to cure with the moisture in the air allows for moss and mould to grow between the paving and so can bring an element of colour.
